Where It Started: 1970
In 1970, Cornelius Verblaauw began a small, hands-on carpentry business with a simple but lasting belief: if you do honest work, treat people well, and pay attention to the details, your reputation will take care of itself. He named it C. Verblaauw & Sons, and from the very beginning, the work was personal. Homes were treated with care, jobs were never rushed, and every project was built as if it were for a member of the family.
Learning the Trade the Old-Fashioned Way
Bruce Verblaauw learned the trade the old-fashioned way by working alongside his father on job sites, gaining not just skills but a deep respect for the craft. Over time, Bruce took on the leadership of the company, growing its capabilities while staying true to the principles it was built on.
A Stronger Foundation: Bruce + Judy
In the early 2000s, his wife Judy officially joined the business, bringing a new level of organization, heart, and a customer-first approach to communication and sales. Together, Bruce and Judy helped guide the company through decades of growth, changing materials, and evolving homeowner expectations.
Why We Evolved
As the company grew, so did its vision. They saw more homeowners looking for more than just a deck. They were searching for a complete outdoor living experience.
At the same time, Bruce and Judy kept hearing familiar frustrations. Homeowners talked about contractors who stopped returning calls, projects that dragged on without updates, budgets that shifted without warning, and finished work that did not match what was promised.
They knew it could be different. So they built a company that communicates clearly, respects homeowners’ time and budgets, and delivers a result worth sharing and standing behind.
NJ Decks & Outdoor Living
That evolution became NJ Decks & Outdoor Living. While the name is new, the heart of the company remains the same. What started as a small family business has become a modern outdoor living company rooted in traditional craftsmanship and personal connection.
Bruce and Judy are still actively involved in the day-to-day, and now, both of their daughters, Ally and Ashley, have joined the company as the third generation to carry on the legacy.
