Is Your Deck Safe? What Every Homeowner Needs to Know
Protect Your Family.
Preserve Your Investment.
Your deck is more than just part of your backyard. It is where memories are made, where families gather, and where you unwind at the end of the day. But like your roof, windows, or siding, your deck has a lifespan. Without regular maintenance and attention, it can become unsafe over time.
At NJ Decks and Outdoor Living, we are proud Deck Safety Month® Ambassadors and long-time advocates for safe, code-compliant outdoor living. We work closely with NADRA (North American Deck and Railing Association) to raise awareness around the importance of deck safety and replacement.
Why Deck Safety Matters
According to NADRA, there are more than 60 million decks in the United States. Of those, an estimated 30 million are past their useful life. Aging decks may appear stable on the surface, but years of exposure to moisture, temperature shifts, heavy snow, and general wear can cause serious structural issues that often go unnoticed.
“Your roof has a life expectancy. Your windows have a life expectancy. What about your deck?”
— Michael Beaudry, Executive VP of NADRA
Deck failures are nearly always preventable. Most are the result of overlooked damage, outdated construction methods, or materials that have deteriorated over time. That is why May is Deck Safety Month® – a national awareness effort to help homeowners understand the risks and take action before problems arise.
What You Should Be Looking For
Based on NADRA’s guidelines and our decades of hands-on experience, here are some of the most common red flags that may signal your deck is no longer safe:
- Rotting or soft wood, especially near the house, stairs, or ledger board
- Rusting or corroded fasteners, including nails, bolts, and screws
- Loose or unstable railings and stair systems
- Missing or improperly installed flashing, which leads to hidden water damage
- Movement or sway when walking across the deck
- Decks built before current codes, especially those more than 10 to 15 years old
“Even something as small as a loose fastener can create a dangerous situation. These issues often go unnoticed until it’s too late.”
— Bruce, Owner
Check Your Deck® the Right Way
NADRA has created a 10-Point Consumer Deck Safety Checklist that every homeowner should use as a starting point. It includes how to check for:
- Signs of rot or decay
- Loose railings and stair systems
- Proper attachment to the home
Overall structural condition and age of the deck
We highly recommend reviewing this checklist, especially if your deck is older or showing signs of wear.

Why Replacement Is Often the Best Option
If your deck is more than a decade old and built with pressure-treated lumber or outdated hardware, repair may not be enough. In many cases, the safest and most cost-effective solution is full replacement.
At NJ Decks and Outdoor Living, we specialize in building modern, low-maintenance, and code-compliant outdoor spaces using:
- Steel or Aluminum framing that resists rot, warping, and insects
- Modern railing systems with stronger, safer materials
- Weather-resistant decking with industry-leading warranties
- Proper flashing and water management systems to prevent future damage
“Homeowners often think they just need new deck boards. But without a solid frame, those upgrades won’t last. Replacing the full structure is often the smarter and safer choice.”
— Judy, Co-owner
